When I started out making soap, I started with melt and pour. It seemed so much easier at the time than messing with curing time, and all the oils, not to mention the lye! I thought that it was a bad idea to mix the smell of lye with the living quarters of our parrot (it’s true! Parrots don’t do well with strong smells and I had no where outside to mix the lye and water). Plus, I was scared. Working with lye was not something I was ready to tackle.
Now that I’ve taken the leap, I’m not sure what I was scared of. Yes, lye is dangerous if the proper safety precautions aren’t followed, but really, I was scared of nothing.
I fixed up a place on our covered porch to mix everything and to keep the fumes away from the sensitive noses of the parrot and the kiddo. I haven’t looked back since.
I love making soap. It’s just like baking for me, following a recipe and being able to enjoy the final product.
If you are thinking of trying it, I highly suggest it. Follow the safety precautions, run any recipe you have through a lye calculator and go for it!
